Bonnet will not release

Post by Welshbear03 » Thu Nov 26, 2020 7:09 pm

Hi .. new to forum ..
My XE prestige D bonnet won’t open
I had it at my local garage today for new pads and discs and asked them to look at it.
They have said it is not possible to get under the engine to access the lock mechanism and that they may need the car for a few days and basically break something to get access to the cable (like front light casing)

Is this a common problem and is there an easier fix?
Thanks in advance.

Will it release and lift up to the first phase? If so, can’t you just do this and spray some Wd40 around where the mechanism is located?

Assuming the cable hasn’t snapped, it could be the release latches have not been greased and possibly a bit of pressure on the bonnet either side might shift them. Get someone to pull the release and at the same time apply some sharp taps with your hand on each end of the bonnet on the front edge. Depending on how the stops have been adjusted you might be able to get your fingers under the front edge of the bonnet and try moving it up and down too. Worth a try.

Hi, same thing as happened to me today, was going to top up the screenwashers and when pulling the bonnet release only the passenger side is releasing, managed to release the centre catch but still no joy with the drivers side catch, any one got any ideas on how to get it to work again?
Many Thanks

I had this issue on my last XE. The latch pulls with no tension.

Sent back to Jaguar on extended warranty, they put the car on the ramp and popped it from underneath. 1 new latch and cable later it was fixed.

Hi Warenag,
thanks for the info, I will take the car to a local garage on Monday to see if they can do the same thing that you describe.

I've looked on my 2016 2.0t and it looks like you should be able to get to the rear of the locks by removing both inner wheel arches without the need to break anything . If they were to put it up on a 2 post lift they should be able to release the locks .

You may also have to remove the front undertray section .

The driver's side will be a bit awkward as it has the sensor for the bonnet lock.

On the nearside of each lock is the release , it's a bit like a trigger of a gun in operation. If you can lever those the bonnet locks should release . If you can see the cable you should be able to tell which way to lever them .
