Illuminated sills - install

Post by GavinG » Tue May 04, 2021 9:52 pm

Managed to get a set of OEM sills for 120 quid (plus bit extra for shipping to Ireland) off eBay.
The install was relatively simple....

Illumination connector can be seen below

No issues removing the passenger side old sill, the drivers side was a completely different story, and I have no idea why, clips seemed the same.
I fought with it for a good 15 minutes, I've taken many car interiors apart over the best part of 25 years, these were the most stubborn clips I've ever encountered :D :D
Perhaps I didn't have the knack or whatever, but we got there in the end¬

Circled in green is the already provided connector for the illumination, it just needs to be "freed" as it's taped up to the larger loom to keep it out of the way.
Remove the bolt from the area circled in red, this will allow some slack on the trim to enable you to be able to move more of the carpet out of your way.
Then you can cut the tape circled in blue to release the cable from the loom

Now you have freed the cable, you can remove the foam protection on it....

To be left with the below, simply connect this to the illumination connector in the previous picture

Stand back and admire your handiwork !!

Looks great, I'm actually considering wiring them so they actually stay on when the doors close, we'll see.....

Excellent "How To" Gavin.

If you haven't already, it would be well worth putting some clear wrap on then to stop the inevitable scratching.

I hadn't even thought of that, truth be told!
I was told in another thread that there are some parts of the exterior that may need protective film as well, guess I need to read up on such film

Thanks!

Yep you should wrap the area at the bottom rear panel just behind the rear doors. All XE's suffer from the same problem which must be due to way the air is funnelled along the side of the car. The one panel just gets machine gunned with tiny bits of road grit and on a newish car, it's only when you look very closely at the panel that tiny marks becomes visible. It will get a lot worse over time if you don't address it. Jaguar obviously know about it but probably due to the design, they can't do much about it, other than beefing up the paintwork in that area which they are just not going to do.
It is an easy fix. You can either buy a length of wrap and cut it to size or buy the pre cut stuff if you don't fancy messing about measuring and cutting. It's not difficult to do and there are loads of wrap videos on YouTube.

Just got a pair of illuminated sills off ebay for 50 quid including postage. Took a couple of minutes to fit passenger side but also had problems with the drivers side, ended up destroying 3 of the old clips while removing.
