Glass deep clean - Clay Mitt

Post by PhilB » Mon May 03, 2021 2:48 pm

At the moment I've got a little runaround pending build of my next wheels estimated in 6-8months.
It's a 67 reg Fiesta 140 ST line and is a one previous owner job and low mileage (15,000) for it's age.
It had been "prepped" prior to handover but like a lot of things you start to notice things afterwards.
Bloody windscreen was awful using the wipers so did the usual clean of the screen and blades with usual glass cleaner.
The swept area was still pretty crappy.
Running my fingers over the rest of the screen it appeared to have nearly 4 years of dried tree sap and crud on it.
Worst on front and rear screens.
Probably lived it's life parked under a tree!
Tried my usual glass cleaner - nope.
Tried Isopropyl alchohol - nope.
Tried some autoglym clear glass which did work after a fashion but a lot of elbow grease .
Looked online and saw people claying screens to clean bad contamination.
Bought myself a clay mitt today and used a spray of warm water with a tiny dash of fairy liquid for lube and all the crud came straight off - instantly.
Cleaned the screen with water afterwards to remove any soap residue and then went over with my usual glass cleaner.
Came up like new.
Always good when you try something new and it works brilliantly.

I would never have thought to do that with glass. I have a couple of spots on my screen that may benefit from that treatment. Good tip, thanks Phil. :D

I once covered my Mercedes in overspray when using a specialist radiator paint to renovate a bathroom towel rail. Car was about 5m from garage door which was half open and side door was also open. After about 2 hours of on off painting in the garage I opened the front door fully to let the sun in to speed up the curing of the paint. My car was covered in milky white overspray which t cut wouldn’t touch. I had to use a clay bar twice over the whole car, paint ,glass, rubber and plastic. Took ages but it worked and car got the full works with polish etc.
As Phil said use a lubricant especially on the windows so they don’t scratch.

Clay is superb for deep cleaning glass, it removes non soluble crud really well.

Agreed, I always clay the glass when I am doing the cars. I've used it on the shower glass too.

Just a little edit, do you guys get RainX over there? There is a paste for cleaning and then a coating as well, it really makes the water fly off the glass http://www.rainx.com.au/

RainX is awesome and has been a standard product in the USA for many decades. With that said, I literally had the last bulk gallon jug of RainX purchased over 30 years ago run out last summer. I bought the latest RainX stuff and, while the water beads still defy gravity and go reverse up the windshield at speed, it seems not to last as long before needing a re-application. I didn't have a Material Safety Data Sheet on the old stuff so I don't know if there was some now-banned chemical ingredient that gave you three eyes and a twitch but gave better lasting performance.

lol we might have the old formula, I used it a few times on the weekend and ended up with a sinus headache each time, especially when you are doing it in an enclosed area like a bathroom.

I think I heard they had fiddled with the formula and it wasn't as effective as the original.
They are now flogging Rainex glass cleaner in a spray bottle which supposedly gives it a coat of the formula each time you use it.
Might be good for bath screens and car glass ?

I only use Rainex on the rear and side windows. On the screen it makes the blades judder. That may even be what is still on my screen. Today I will be claying the screen from Phil's tip.

Yep clay mitt is great at glass. Never thought of using it on the shower screen, trying that next

My go to glass cleaner for 30 years is Autoglym Glass Polish . It's a bit dusty but wipe on, quick rub and polish off, after a couple of minutes, when it dries Always crystal clear, no smears, works first time and minimal effort, inside and out (cover the dash with a sheet to catch the dust). Tried others but always go back to this.
