Fitting wing mirror dynamic/sweeping indicators (a short guide!)

Hopefully this will inspire anybody thinking of fitting said indicators! It's a 5 min job per side.

I think we can agree that the factory fitted mirror repeater is trash, it's barely visible in daylight (they're like this on many cars imo).

Have a look at this before and after video I took:

Waaay better, right?
Only cost 28 American cash dollahs! And only 3 weeks to get to Ireland, so imagine similar for UK. (This is the particular seller I used https://www.aliexpress.com/store/911293204?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.4fc34c4dMzam4D but I'm sure they're all much of a muchness)

What you get:
Musical instrument accessory Rectangle Gadget Material property Office equipment

Well packaged:
Jaw Gesture Automotive design Art Vehicle door

Contents (you get a trim tool and a torx driver):
Blue Azure Sleeve Waist Collar

Detach mirror from its support bracket:
Use controls to adjust mirror so that it's at its maximum angle pointing INTO the car, this will leave a gap on the outer side of the mirror housing so you can fit a trim tool in to unclip the mirror from its housing.
In the pic below I have highlighted (in red) the main points at which the mirror clips onto the adjustment motor, aim your trim tool at one of these, I suggest the one at about 4 or 5 o'clock, once you've unclipped it from one point you can just unclip the rest with your fingers, it's pretty easy.
With that out of the way, you need to find the clip highlighted in yellow and just lift it up with your finger, it's not very tight, so really easy to do.
Once you've lifted this clip you'll notice the mirror housing lift out a little at the existing indicator, this gives you room to run your trim tool along the indicator to release the rest of the clips, again really straightforward, doesn't take much persuasion!

Out with the old, in with the new:
You will be left with the below, remove the two torx screws highlighted, unclip the electrical connection and lift out - you may have to 'jiggle' the indicator a little to remove, but again, really easy.
Slot in the replacement indicator and screw and connect it back up.
Pop mirror cover back on, there's no real way to explain how to do this, I might suggest starting to clip it back on at the lowest point nearest the door, in any case it's not rocket surgery, you'll get it back on without issue if you've gotten this far!

Then pop the mirror back on it's adjustment motor, it clips on super easy, you're done.

I urge you to give it a go if you like the look of it, it's super super easy and cheap as the proverbial.
I can try to answer any questions if you have any, enjoy!

That looks an interesting upgrade - more modern and also more visible.

I'll post a link to this over on the sister F-Type forum if that's ok Gavin.

Can't say I've ever noticed anyone's wing mirror indicators, animated or not, when determining whether another car is turning.... always look at their main indicator lights

Hi,

Tempted to do my one, XE 2016 R-sport diesel, 180HP, wonder if this will fit: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001260604523.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4d1yLdBH
They look ok to me, although they are a little cheaper in the store that I linked to and we know for sure they fit.
To be clear I have no affiliation or anything like that with the store I linked to :D , I don't know what country it's even in (just assume China)

I fitted mine about a month ago, the pics make the product look cheap but the reality is they look so much better in the "flesh".
A worthy upgrade imo
Very much agree, very pleased with the quality when I installed them for the first time about 4 years ago on my last car, one failed after about 18 months, but that was it, rock solid since.
I'm personally ok with throwing 20 or 30 quid on a set of replacements if they only ever last 4 years!

Hi, I have fitted these very same wing mirror indicators onto my XE, but instead of removing the mirror glass I just got a firm hold onto the bulbous part of the door mirror cover and lifted it up swiftly to remove it giving access to the two screws to remove the indicator panel and fit the new - very quick! :D
I can confirm this way - maximum 6min per mirror :).
You can see it on this video (it is XF, but the same mirrors)

And I bought this one (paid more):

Excellent! I was going to link to your post in my original post, but doesn't look like I can edit my post.

I tend to write my "guides" mindful of people who may not be used to performing their own maintenance or the likes, there's a good bit of brute force in doing it without removing the mirror, less so with mirror removed - but both certainly equally valid!

Just for a little more information on these, there are 2 different styles of these indicators, a dark smoked look and a slightly lighter frosted look.

These both flash in exactly the same way but the dark smoked ones are noticeably dimmer in operation than the lighter frosted look ones, although the frosted ones still look dark when fitted on the car and not being used.

I bought both sets to see which I preferred and now have the darker set for sale if anyone is interested. £20 Inc. postage. :D

I'd assumed that, on XEs from MY20 onwards, which have the animated main direction indicators, the door mirror repeaters would also be animated. I've just checked mine on my MY20 and, no, the repeaters are the same rather feeble ones as they've always been, which just a rather dim light at each end. Shame!

Yeah those car compatibility checkers aren't an exact science :)

These are the exact ones I bought > clicky

These seem to be right, from an alleged UK seller on eBay > clicky

Or there's growler's post above

Whatever you're most comfortable with

I also want to thank Gavin, for starting this thread. Did mine on the weekend after work. Takes a few minutes each side. Longest wait is the delivery from China! Only issue I had was the plastic lever that came with it to pry the mirror cover off was absolutely crap. Almost a hard rubber than plastic it just snapped. I wanted to remove the cover as per the second suggestion in this thread, without removing the mirror glass. But without the plastic lever I could do neither. Then I had a thought, I adjusted the mirror to its most upwards position. Then with a torch and a flat screwdriver I managed to slip the screwdriver between the mirror and bottom edge of the mirror casing and pop the cover tab this way. Once i did one side the other was much easier. So another third method of removing the mirror cover, without any specialist tools!

I agree they are a great upgrade and big improvement on the standard mirror indicators, I love mine!
I love mine also and agree they are a huge improvement on the almost invisible (in daylight) standard ones. Only regret is that you can't see them when you're driving!
